Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abhinav Trikha has ordered an inquiry into the Batala Municipal Committee’s (MC) faux pas of removing barricades from the six-decade-old Hansli bridge after the PWD authorities had declared it unsafe about three months ago. Overhead iron barricades were installed to minimise the flow of traffic. However, about ten days ago, the MC removed the barricades virtually declaring the structure as safe. Sources say that even though no repair or renovation work had been undertaken, the bridge had been declared secure. The barriers were installed on the bridge, considered to be the lifeline of the ‘steel city’ and on which several generations have travelled for the last 60 years, by the MC authorities on the directions of PWD engineers.
