As many as 23 cases of child labour were detected in Jalandhar district during the anti-child labour week, observed from June 15 to June 21. Deputy Commissioner K K Yadav said the teams comprising officials of Labour, Education, Social justice, Women and Child Development, Police and Local Bodies conducted checking of about 820 different units, including brick kilns and industrial premises. Twenty three children were rescued from these units who were engaged as child labour to do even dangerous jobs. He said under the Child Labour Prevention Act 1986, a child, below the age of 14 cannot be forced to do labour job. The person, individual or unit, can be imprisonmed for three years, besides a fine of Rs 10,000 to 20,000. He said the task force had been set up in the district to check child labour.
