The Statistics Day was celebrated by Economic and Statistical Organization, Punjab, the nodal development for Statistics of Punjab Government at Chandigarh. This day is celebrated every year at the national and sub-national level in recognition of great contribution made by late Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis in the field of statistical development and economic planning. The theme of this year statistics day is “Social Development Statistics”. Objective of celebration of the day is to acknowledge the role of statistics in various fields and create public awareness, specially among the younger generation and drawing inspiration from Late Prof. Mahalanobis. Speaking on the occasion Sh. M.L. Sharma, Economic Adviser Punjab said that Statisticians could take forward the legacy of Prof. Mahalanobis by enabling timely delivery of accurate statistics for informed decision making for the welfare of people primarily socially deprived and under privilege sections. He underlined the key importance of statistics on social development to measure the real impact of economic development on society. He said without social development, economic development has little significance.
