Nearly half-a-dozen policemen were injured at Malerkotla today when they tried to stop a group of agitated people out to torch some roadside kiosks in protest against a firing incident on Sunday.
Tanbir (25) of Jamalpur locality was injured in the firing and later he succumbed to his injuries at Rajendra hospital, Patiala. The mob started stone pelting when police stopped them for torching the kiosks. The injured cops are under treatment, according to informed sources. No case was registered against anyone following today’s incident. Though a murder case has been registered against Ajmal, who is still absconding. The mob, showing sympathy with the deceased family and friends were protesting against inaction of police, which has failed to arrest the alleged accused, Ajmal, so far. The mob also had blocked the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road at Jerg Chowk yesterday. Sources say the situation continues to remain tense at Malerkotla today. It is reported that the shooting of Tanbir was result of group rivalry.
