State Congress chief Pratap Singh Bajwa, in a public rally negated the role of Captain Amarinder Singh in ending the water sharing agreements during the latter’s tenure as Punjab CM. In a development that’s bound to start spark another war of words, Bajwa, while obliquely referring to Amarinder, said “not one individual” but the entire Congress and even opposition parties in the state had played a role in passing the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, 2004. The PPCC chief said the Act would not have had seen the light of the day hadn’t Akalis, CPI and CPM lent their support. The Act is the best source of ‘pride’ for Amarinder and his loyalists and it is for the first time that someone from within the Congress has challenged his leading role in passage of the Act, which had nullified water sharing agreements with Haryana and Rajasthan. Addressing an impressive gathering at party rally in Sangrur, Bajwa said, “You should not become victim of misunderstandings. No individual can be given credit for historic decisions. When there was issue of giving Punjab waters to Haryana, entire state unit of Punjab Congress united and took a historic decision that not even single drop of water will flow outside the state. We invited an all-party meeting and called Akalis, CPI and CPM. A historic special session of Punjab assembly was called where all parties had unanimously decided to terminate the water sharing agreements.”
