Over 2,700 petrol pump owners in Punjab have refused to supply fuel to Punjab Police following non-payment of earlier bills worth crores. Interestingly, the chief minister’s home town of Bathinda tops the list of defaulters when it comes to clearing pending fuel bills worth lakhs used primarily by the government department, including police. A single district consumes around Rs 3 lakh to Rs 7 lakh per month of fuel and pendency in almost all districts is almost over Rs 25 lakhs. A Superintendent Police (headquarters) confirmed that they were facing problems to get their vehicles filled after the petrol pumps refused credit to them. “In addition to the law and order duty, we have to shift criminals from one jail to other and also take them for court hearings. Escort vehicles provided to VIPs add to the fuel bill”, he stated adding that repeated reminders for payments are pending with the Finance Department.
