Former Punjab director general of police (DGP), prisons, Shashi Kant on Wednesday claimed before the Punjab and Haryana high court that the drug menace problem in Punjab had “deliberately been shrunk by the state and that the drug business was worth Rs 1 lakh crore per year”.In his application given to the high court, Kant has demanded that Haryana be brought under the ambit of the petition as it was also “coming up fast on the drug map”.It was on Kant’s letter in 2013 that the high court had initiated a suo motu petition on the drug menace in Punjab.Kant told the court that a handful of individuals, mostly NRIs, had been linked with the case in the probe by Punjab Police. “These individuals are not the only ones running the entire drug racket worth approximately Rs 1 lakh crore per year,” Kant said in the court.
