The restoration work in the Golden Temple has slowed down as the SGPC is finding it tough to handle the rush of devotees in the shrine. Sources said the restoration of artwork and gold work on the walls and the ceilings of the first floor was almost complete. Now, it is being covered with glass to prevent it from getting damaged in the future. However, the area where Guru Granth Sahib is installed and the pilgrims pay obeisance on the first floor is untouched as it would require a cautious approach as prayers are on there throughout the day. Sources said the work on putting up glass on the artwork was expected to be over by August 30. The glass was also put up in the past to protect precious artwork. However, this time there will be a gap between the wall and the glass so as to allow air to pass through it. In the past, moisture would get trapped between the wall and the glass that led to flaking of artwork. Besides, the work on the staircase leading from the second floor to the top floor of the shrine is also yet to take off due to the high number of devotees. Meanwhile, the restoration work inside the sanctum sanctorum is also moving at a snail’s pace as gurbani recitation starts there in the wee hours and continues till night, while thousands of pilgrims pay obeisance at the holy shrine daily. Sources say a team of conservation experts, engaged in the project, is being provided 45 minutes daily at night to carry out the restoration work at the sanctum sanctorum. The time has been increased a bit recently.
