Dissociating himself from the issue of implementation of Sikh rehat maryada (code of religious conduct) and Nanakshahi Calendar at Takht Hazur Sahib in Nanded, Maharashtra, president of the Takht’s management board Tara Singh shifted the onus of all religious affairs on Jathedar Baba Kulwant Singh. A BJP MLA from Muland assembly constituency in Mumbai, Tara Singh’s appointment as chief of Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Management Board by the Maharashtra government had come under severe criticism. Many Sikh leaders had termed his appointment as ‘saffronization of Takht Hazur Sahib’ as Tara Singh is considered to be towing the RSS’s ideology. He was in Amritsar on Sunday. Talking to TOI, he said, “My responsibility is to see the development, kar sewa, facilities for sangat and development of the area around Takht Sahib, whereas Baba Kulwant Singh and the five high priests have the responsibility of managing religious affairs and implementation of maryada.” When asked about his image as a Sikh leader towing Hindu ideology, he replied that his party, the BJP, and he shared good relations with the RSS.
