Until the international flights begin operations from what is called the Chandigarh international airport — new terminal and major part of the airstrip in SAS Nagar notwithstanding — the real economic potential of this muchneeded facility in Punjab will remain untapped. Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the international civil air terminal on Friday, there is no confirmation about when the international flights will begin regular operations. Or, the international flights will start operations at all keeping in view the fact that vested business interests are not letting the Chandigarh airport emerge as a rival hub to the Delhi international airport in North. According to government estimates, around 25% of the total traffic (more than 5,000 passengers) at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, originates from Punjab, Chandigarh and parts of Haryana adjoining Chandigarh.
