Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Punjab visit to Dhudike village in Moga to pay tributes to martyr Lala Lajpat Rai on his 150th birth anniversary has been called off. Hectic preparations had been on for the past three months and even tents had been put up at the venue. Lala Lajpat Rai Birthplace Memorial Committee secretary Ranjit Singh Dhanna and Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma on Sunday confirmed that Modi would not be coming for the occasion. Only last week, Punjab minister Madan Mohan Mittal had declared PM’s visit to Dhudike. Lala Lajpat Rai was born at Dhudike on January 28, 1865. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit has been the talk of the town for the last three months, after the national implementation committee on commemorations held its meeting in New Delhi on May 19. In the meeting held with Union home minister Rajnath Singh, it was decided to observe the 150th birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai,” said Dhanna. “Only two days ago, I had visited Delhi to inquire about the visit of the Prime Minister. The PMO made it clear that Modi has no plan to visit Dhudike on August 28,” he added.
