Punjab Medical Council (PMC) has expressed strong reservations over interference into its functioning by the state medical education minister Anil Joshi in the matter of “ghost teachers” working in various medical colleges. PMC president Dr G S Grewal has questioned the clean chit given to delinquent doctors by the minister and has decided to go ahead with its proceedings against them. “In view of binding statutory regulations and rules which cannot be transposed, the proceedings against ghost doctors cannot be stalled under arbitrary pretext. PMC registrar is therefore duty bound to call a meeting of the committee to look and inquire into the issue of ghost doctors on September 18 at 11am in the council office and send notices to all ghost doctors registered under PMC without any exception,” he said. In a letter to Joshi, Dr Grewal said the minister did not appear to have been properly informed about the issue. “I apprehend that your goodself has been misinformed about the action taken by PMC in this regard and also in regard to cuts and commissions received by some doctors which is a total violation of the medical ethics,” he stated in the letter.
