Barely a week after the release of 22 Punjabi youths from a jail in Miami, US, come reports of 68 more Indian youths, mostly Punjabis, being confined in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Tacoma contract detention centre in Seattle, Washington state.
This came to light after North American Punjabi Association executive director Satnam Singh Chahal wrote to ICE authorities seeking information about Indians confined in US jails. Chahal said ICE authorities had told him that of the 68, about half were detained last month when they tried to sneak illegally into the US from across the border. Most of them are from Punjab, he said. In her reply to Chahal’s request for information, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Western Regional Communications director Virginia Kice said there were 68 Indian nationals in custody at the Tacoma centre but the arrest dates of these individuals varied widely. While stating that very few had been detained for more than a year due to pending legal appeals, the communique informed that the average duration of ICE detention nationwide was slightly over 30 days.
