Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited the family of Punjab farmer Surjit Singh, who had committed suicide on June 10 by consuming a poisonous substance.Rahul reached the Dadu Majra village in Fatehgarh Sahib district, early on Thursday morning and offered condolences to the grieving family. He was with them for over 30 minutes, as he assured the family about giving due prominence to the issue.Rahul’s visit was not known to the senior party leaders. However, television crews had reached Surjit’s village before Rahul’s arrival. He landed at the Chandigarh airport and travelled to the village in a car. He did not speak to media persons.
Farmer Surjit Singh, 60, had earlier briefed the Congress vice- president about the plight of farmers in Sirhind, Punjab, whose crops had been destroyed by the unseasonal rains, on April 28, before committing suicide on June 10.
