Chandigarh was named among the 100 cities selected nationwide under the Central government’s ambitious smart city mission, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday.Getting funds under the mission seems not an easy job and whether the city will be selected in the list of 20 cities in phase-1 will depend upon the proposal it submits to the Central government, it is learnt. Adviser to Administrator Vijay Dev told Newsline that cities would be selected for Central grant through competition that intends to link financing with their ability to perform as per the guidelines released for the scheme. One of the key guidelines for cities, as shared by Finance Secretary Singh, is to ensure a proper financial discipline. For instance, cities’ recovery of proper property tax or water bills will play a crucial role in getting funds from the Centre under the smart city mission.
