In the coming years, Panjab University (PU) students may have to pay around 50% more in hostel fees as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked officials to make its hostels self sustaining. While a final decision in this regard is yet to be taken, students will have to shell out 1.5 times the present fee from subsequent sessions if the hostels have to pay staff salaries out of their earnings.
However, the university is contemplating starting a self-sustaining model only for new hostels — a decision that will be implemented once it goes through PU’s decision making bodies. The suggestion has been made fearing backlash from the students residing in existing hostels, in case the fee is suddenly hiked.
