India’s celebrated boxing champion Vijender Singh, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is set to join the professional ranks. If Vijender (29) turns pro, he would be unable to represent India in the amateurs-only events such as the Olympics or Asian and Commonwealth Games.
While the boxing fraternity seems to be aware of Vijender’s decision, the boxer has not informed his employers or the sports organisations that had invested deeply in his development into a top-class boxer. A formal announcement about Vijender turning pro is likely to come in London by British promoter Francis Warren on Monday. But officials back in India are still in the dark about the possibility that Vijender could turn pro. Vijender is “presently on leave” and “going to join the Indian boxing camp in Patiala next month”.
Sources close to the Indian boxer confirmed to The Tribune that Vijender is likely to join professional boxing soon. “I would not be surprised if he announces this, he has been training in London for nearly a month, visiting India only for his shooting schedule,” said a source close to the boxer.
SAI Director Injeti Srinivas had discussed Vijender with boxing officials and has already been made aware that Vijender could turn pro. “I cannot comment on this at this stage,” Srinivas said. Indian Boxing Federation (presently under suspension) president Abhishek Matoria said he had learnt that Vijender could turn pro soon. “But nothing official has been received by us,” he said.
