Rock Garden creator Nek Chand will go down in history for giving Chandigarh its unique artistic style with an art-from-waste success story that seemed to run parallel to master architect Le Corbusier’s vision of a capital city going on to get worldwide recognition.
The two stories are so interwoven that Nek Chand first set foot on a cluster of villages that was yet to be christened Chandigarh. A road inspector with the public works department, he was tasked with giving a network of roads to the city in the making in 1951. This also marks the beginning of Rock Garden’s journey from a reserved area to a fairyland with hundreds of mesmerizing human and animal figures sometime around 1959. Fifty years later, visitors at the Chandigarh international airport and railway station are greeted by these images that represent the city’s identity.
