Punjab is a part of India. Punjabi culture is a rich culture and punjabi marriage is traditionally conducted in Punjab. Punjabi weddings are based on traditions, Ritual and conducted with a strong reflection of the Punjabi culture. In Punjabi marriage atmosphere is very energetic and very loud full of music, dancing and colours.
The marriage function consists of following Rituals:-
A Pre Wedding Ritual:–
Roka (ਰੋਕਾ): – Roka is first wedding Ritual in which two families finalise the relationship. This Ritual marks the beginning of a relationship between the two Groom and Bride. When couple and families agree to wedding, and then come roka ceremony. In this function bride and groom family member and relatives are involved and families exchange the sweets, gifts, sweets, dry fruits and fruits. Roka is first step start the marriage. Roka word comes from the Hindi word ‘rok’, Rok means ‘stop’. Basically Roka means they have stopped to looking a match for daughter / son.
ENGAGEMENT:–
Mangni (ਮੰਗਨੀ):- In this ritual boy and girl ring ceremony done. Boy slips the ring on the girl finger and girl also receptor. This ritual is start from boy side gifting red clothes and accessories. After engagement the bride’s family gives the gift of groom family. And the groom family gave basket of fruits to bride family.
Sangeet (ਸੰਗੀਤ): – Sangeet is one of the interesting functions of the marriage. Before the marriage the friends and relatives get together for singing sessions at the boy`s house as well as the girl`s house. This function is fun filled occasion and a time dancing and singing. Sangeet is most interesting and attractive part of marriage.
Mehndi (ਮੇਹੰਦੀ): – This is the last function before the wedding. In this Virtual apply mehendi to the boy’s hand and bride’s hands and feet. And mehendi has been sent by girls in lows.
Jago (ਜਾਗੋ): – This is most tradition event of women in Punjab going from house to house and waking up persons in the night and sings the song and dance in house.
Watna and Chuda Ceremony (ਵਤਨਾ ਤੇ ਛੁੜਾ): – Make Vatna with powder that consisting of (besan) turmeric and mustard oil and applied to the bodies of bride and the groom and then followed by a ritual bath. After Vatna bride wear the Chuda.
WEDDING DAY:-
Sehrabandi (ਸੇਹਰਾ ਬੰਦੀ): – This virtual take place at boy is getting ready to leave for the wedding venue. After the boy has dressed up in his marriage clothes then sherabandi is performed.
Ghodi Chadna (ਘੋੜੀ ਚੜਨਾ): – This is the final ritual at boy house. After that groom’s the horse ad go to the wedding venue.
Baraat (ਬਾਰਾਤ): – The girl’s family waits at the entrance to the groom and his family. After comes the brat wedding ritual start.
Milni (ਮਿਲਣੀ): – When boy’s brat reaches the venue then milni is performed. In this ritual bride relative give shagun to the groom relatives.
Varmala (ਵਰਮਾਲਾ): – This is the actual starting of rituals in this exchange of varmala between the boy and girl. Relatives and Friends of the boy and girl indulge in fun and celebrate this function.
After that puja start and during this time period, bride’s sisters start stealing of shoes. In this ritual the girls demand to charge a fee and then return the shoes it is a fun tradition of wedding.
Kanyadaan and Phere (ਧਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਦੌਰ): – This is very important ritual of marring in which girl’s father giving hand of daughter’s to the boy, and then Phere start in front of the religious fire. After that Sindoor ritual start when the boy applies sindoor in to the girl’s forehead. When all rituals are over then bride and groom gets up to touch the feet of elder members in the family.
Vidai (ਛੱਡੋ): – This is the final ritual at the bride house. After the phere and kanyadaan this is the final ritual that takes place. In vidai ceremony the girl is accompanied by her parents and relatives. After that father of the girl taker her to the car and hands her to boy hand. In short vidai means goodbye. Vidai is an emotional moment in which family bid goodbye to the girl. After that brothers of girl push the car as girl leaves. At the end Girl relatives throw the coins.
WELCOME OF BRIDE:
Pani Varna (ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਵਰਨਾ): – This ritual at the groom house. (Welcoming the newly Bride). When all ritual completed then newly couple come from the boy home. And now boy’s mother stands in front of the gate with water. Mother slowly spins the cup of water around the groom and bride for 4-7 times and then drinks it.
Kngna (ਇਸੇ): – This is a fun game. The girl and boy open bracelets of each other’s in the presence of all the relatives. Wife opens her husband’s bracelet first.
